Here at C2 California Clean, we want to help you live a healthy, happy life! Your heart health is extremely important to your well-being, so to make sure you keep it strong and working right, here are a few tips you should follow:
1) Be a Healthy Weight
Calculate your BMI (Body Mass Index) and see if you are underweight, normal, overweight, or obese. If your BMI says that you are overweight or obese, talk with your doctor about healthy ways to start losing weight. The first step will most likely be to increase how much you exercise and start eating a healthier diet. When you are at a healthy weight, your chances for heart disease and stroke fall dramatically.
2) Eat Less Bad Fats
Eat less saturated fats and try not to eat any trans fats if you want a healthier heart! Small amount of saturated fats are good, along with unsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, but trans fats clog arteries and also increase cholesterol levels.
3) Avoid Secondhand Smoke/ Quit Smoking
If you are a smoker, you are twice as likely to have a heart attack than those who don’t smoke. If you are around secondhand smoke, your risk for heart disease increases by 25-30 percent.
4) Get Moving
Those who are active have a lower risk for cardiovascular diseases. Start with moderate exercising, about 30 minutes, 4-5 days a week. You should also try and get up and move throughout the day, especially if you have a desk job. Some other great tips are to park farther in the parking lot to force yourself to walk a longer distance, or, take the stairs instead of the elevator.
5) Stress Less
Stress changes the way your blood clots and increases your risk of heart attack. Try and find ways to relax such as yoga, meditation, or a weekly night out with your friends.
6) Watch and Control Your Blood Pressure
Those with high blood pressure are more at risk for heart disease, stroke, blood clots, and other severe cardiovascular problems. Check your blood pressure every so often and talk with your doctor if your numbers are higher than 120/80 (the ADA recommendation for healthy blood pressure).
