UVA Rays (the ones responsible for dark spots, wrinkles, and skin cancer) can still get to your skin through glass. Even if you spend most of your time indoors during the winter, UVA rays still have the capability of damaging your skin. The ozone is the thinnest in the winter months. During the summer months, the ozone layer acts as a form of sunscreen for the Earth. It works to filter out and protect us from UV rays. Ozone levels are typically the lowest between December and March – so even though the sun doesn’t seem as threatening during these months, you have less natural protection – which is why sunscreen is just as important during these months as it is during the hottest time of year.
Higher elevation = more UV exposure. Hiking the snowy mountains is a popular winter activity, but the higher up you go, the more you skin is being exposed to dangerous rays. UV exposure increases by 4% every 1,000ft increase in elevation. So, hiking in the mountains can actually end up doing more damage to your skin than a day at the pool if you aren’t careful!
