We've talked about the serious dangers of parabens before, but check out four other toxic beauty ingredients that you should be on the lookout for in your products as well.
Toluene is a chemical usually found in nail polish and hair dyes. Aside from short term effects like headaches and dry skin, it can also cause long term problems such as developmental toxicity, organ system toxicity, and reproductive toxicity. It is often listed as benzene, methylbenzene, toluol. Pregnant women in particular should stay completely away from this chemical - research shows that it is possible that exposure to fumes containing toluene can cause developmental damage to a fetus. There is currently more research being done on this chemical that may connect it to blood cancer as well. The EWG considers toluene one of the most toxic ingredients seen in products today.
Oxybenzone is one of the most toxic ingredients in cosmetic products according to the EWG. It is most commonly found in sunscreens because it provides UV coverage. Oxybenzone can cause hormone disruption and skin cancer. It has been increasingly linked to endometriosis, male infertility, early puberty in girls, and hormone-related cancers. In order to protect yourself and your family from its dangerous side effects, choose a oxybenzone-free sunscreen.
Triclosan can be found in numerous products including: deodorant, cosmetics, toothpaste, and soap. It was originally intended for hospital use - as it is a synthetic chemical that inhibits the growth of bacteria. Triclosan is a suspected carcinogen, as well as an endocrine disruptor. The side effects of too much exposure can include thyroid problems, hormone imbalances, a weakened immune system, an increased risk of allergies and eczema in children, and reproductive toxicity. Another scary fact about triclosan is that it can absorb in your fat for long periods of time - which is why it can be found in breast milk, blood work, and urine samples.
BHA & BHT
BHA and BHT are synthetic antioxidants that are commonly found in lipsticks, moisturizers, diaper creams, and many other popular cosmetic products. Companies use them to help extend the shelf life of their products. BHA and BHT are hormone disruptors and may cause damage to the liver and kidneys - they can result in organ system toxicity. The International Agency for Research on Cancer has also listed BHA and BHT as possible carcinogens. On top of all of this, these ingredients also commonly cause allergic reactions. Avoiding these preservatives is the safest option to prevent any of these harmful side effects.
